Challenges

Sometimes the idea of doing "a little more a little better" seems like such slow progress. Day in and day out, it's difficult to appreciate where we are going and where we have been. Occasionally though after weeks or months (or sometimes years) of trudging away after a goal, we randomly experience something we never thought possible.

For months on and off, I've been doing handstand walkups and holding them for a while as a part of some of my workouts. After seeing pic after pic of my RKC buddies doing one-armed handstands, I decided to see how far I could get. Imagine my surprise when I nailed it first time! I was dumbfounded--especially when I did it again, and then on my less strong side! I was bubbling with excitement.

With the coming of autumn and a return to standard time, the light wanes quickly but it is certainly beautiful when it's here. ...and the Gym Jen lighting system is a fun change up to the routine. ;)

36# then 46# OH squats

So 26 went up well enough yesterday and a gauntlet was thrown. Here's 36# then 46#. Since I had such an issue getting the 46 over my head, I didn't put anymore weight in the bag but tried double 12's. That I couldn't do...yet. ;)

....I almost forgot to post the picture from our hike today. The hubby and I went to O'Leno State Park and had a GREAT time. It was our first trip there, but we'll certainly be going back. The sink holes you see in the background are covered with duckweek, one of the world's smallest water plants. If you look at that green stuff up close, it's actually gajillions (that's the official number, btw) of teeny, tiny leaves with teeny tiny root systems. They're really cool It's not slimy at all despite the appearance.

Overhead Squats

I tried a little something fun today after some inspiration from my Lean Eating coach Krista Schaus. She was doing some OH squats with MUCH heavier weight, so I thought I'd try baby doses. Here's me with a 27 pound sandbag. I include the bottom video because I thought it was too cute how Luna comes across in it.
I also include a picture of my in house coaches. ;)

Friends

Off-162.5#

As far as friends go, I'm not a very good one to have. I am not very dependable. Reaching me by phone is nigh unto impossible. I am dedicated to a fault to my husband, and as a result, find little time to spend with my friends. I know this though I am not proud of it, and it is not likely something that will change.

Regardless of my own faults, I am blessed beyond measure to be surrounded--in the tangible world, in the cyber-world, and in a few instances where those worlds cross over,--with amazing and wonderful friends. I do not deserve them or their love but they give it regardless, and for that I am infinitely grateful. In May I spent some time with some of those friends in Tennessee and snapped pictures while I was there. I came away with some of my best images ever as far as I'm concerned.
This image was completely impromptu. We were spending the morning just hanging out in the back yard playing, them with one another, me with my camera. Jamie lay down with the baby on his stomach, and big sister grabbed her baby and did the same. It was too cute.

Here's an example of the difference it makes for me to do a little tweaking before a print is finished. The top is the rough edit while the second image is the final work. This image is complete in a way that few outsiders can understand. It contains the whole family with their home in the left of the background and their pavilion to the right background. They spend hours upon hours under than pavilion and in that yard.

WORKOUT:
5 rounds of...
20kg Clean & Push Press x 2, 16kg C&P x 3: Right then Left
5 perfect pushups--elevated in the first two rounds, from the knees in the last three.
20kg walking lunges x 10
Double 20kg Deads
Plank x 30
...I hit a strict C&P of the 20 on the left in 3 of the rounds, though not the first three as you would think. I also got a strict C&P of the 20 on the right for the first time in round 3. Why round three do you think and why didn't I hit the press on the left in the first 3 rounds? In a word, TENSION. I wasn't holding it as I should have been on the other rounds on the left, and I finally got it correct on the right. On that third round on the right, I set myself up, went through the motions without weight, holding perfect tension, feeling that weight go up. Then I immediately did it with the weight. It wasn't easy, but it went up--with tension.

I always wish I had some kettlebell buddies around. I miss the intellectual collaboration, the drive that we can instill in one another, the competition. You all are invaluable over the internet, but I wish I could teleport you to me on occasion. Today was one of those occasions. Undoubtedly, the tension would be a bit more consistent. :)

Rest 4 min
20kg Tabata swings
Rest 2 min
20kg Tabata swings
Rest 2 min
30 Challenge burpees in 3'45"

YESTERDAY'S WORKOUT: 30 minutes easy walking with Abbie. I actually started to do the above workout and got about 3 minutes into it before calling it quits. Hormone fluctuations got the best of me. I was weak and loose. I felt absolutely horrible. Rather than risk injury, I just moved on to a lighter workout. Seems like maybe it paid off.

Off--158.5# (I finally dug out the scale, and honestly, the damage wasn't nearly as bad as I'd anticipated.)

Here's a pic from my going away party...That would be Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Steele (& Melissa's 12 weeks pregnant with Baby Steele), Brandi, Jamie, me, Candace, Wendy, Brittani, Jessica (due to pop any second), and Nikki who had a beautiful baby girl about 2 weeks ago. And, no, I don't drink the water there. It seems to make everyone pregnant!
We had a great time at Los Portales and completely monopolized the back room for a couple of hours. We missed a few folks who weren't able to make it, but many of them I said my good-byes to elsewhere. These folks are family to me. I love them (and miss them) dearly. They've been checking up on me regularly since I left, and for that I am most thankful. I really am the luckiest girl in the world.

On a different note, the hubby and I went with a couple of friends down a local river. We rocked two-man kayaks and had a great time. Honestly, I was ready for a workout, but the current was brisk enough that all we really had to do was steer. Cranes, egrets, cormorants, ducks and some birds I didn't recognize were out in full force. TL and Jeff even saw a river otter, but the hubby and I missed it. We'll have to catch it next time. :)

WORKOUT: 20kg TGU 1/1 until I was smoked which turned out to be 7 per side over about 14 minutes.

Then I decided to mess around with the 20kg a little more, so I decided to do some high pulls. They felt so good, I decided to try a snatch. I ended up doing one on each side then doing it again--except I got five in a row on each side!!! I was quite excited.

Then I decided to do the squat-thrust/swing descention/ascention workout with the 20 kg. I think it took me 24'45" (I'm to lazy to get up and look at my book).

All-in-all a fantastic workout.

Masochism-- and, yes, I know I'm remarkably photogenic.

Work 6p-8a
158.5#--Yes, I have to be one of a very few people who actually frikkin' gained weight at the RKC. And I swear I didn't even eat more except a planned splurge on Sunday night. ARGH!

No matter how much I ponder it, I just cannot muster the words to describe this weekend. Time and again over the last few days, I have sat with my computer in my lap, trying to find what to say, and each time I have moved to the next task on my list, unable to get started. So I've come to the conclusion that I should just begin and let the words take on a life of their own with no heed to eloquence or chronology or anything else, really, except the need to somehow record some of what the RKC was for me.

I'd be a fool to say I left home Thursday with no sense of anxiety, so I'll not even try that little white lie. Whether from the change in schedule, excitement, nerves or a combination of it all, I don't know, but regardless, I could not sleep Wednesday night, so I just got up early to get ready to meet my ride. With the wheels in motion, my nerves settled, and I got progressively more excited until I found the sweet little gift of chewing gum someone so kindly left attached to my seat belt on the plane. As luck would have it, the couple in front of me on the plane heard me complaining to the flight attendant and turned around to loan me some fingernail polish remover to help de-gum. Turns out, they were a couple from Montgomery, Alabama who own a Crossfit gym there and were also on their way to the cert. Mark Lemkuhl, the husband, would even turn out to be on my team. Gum removed from all but a small portion of my pants, we landed safely and headed out, picking up Sandy Sommer at the baggage claim (no implication here that Sandy would be baggage). Shortly after getting settled at the hotel, Sandy and I had dinner with Angela, another friend he had met online who would also turn out to be on our team. Then we headed over to the meet and greet where we found out on what teams we would be and met some of the others naive enough or masochistic enough for this weekend. About 9 o'clock folks started filtering out, heading off in search of rest before our big day on Friday.

I was no exception to that rule, and found myself sound asleep by 11:00...and wide awake again at 5 a.m. at which point I began to think horrible thoughts of failure about the snatch test. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't think positive thoughts about it. They were all negative, horribly negative. And they manifested themselves a few hours later. The day started with a weigh-in to know how many snatches we had to do, and guess what...I did have to do 50 snatches, not 40. I had read the chart wrong when I thought I was reassuring myself. I read it right when I had the freak-out spell. All I could think was, "Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck...." and that only got worse when they told me I couldn't use my Tracy Rif Socks. I could have sworn I read that they would be fine, and I didn't specifically ask David if they were okay for the snatch test, just the weekend in general. So when Phil stopped me and told me I couldn't use them, I came unglued. My hands were horribly sweaty before I even started. By the time I hit the 22nd rep on the left, my starting arm, the bell almost flew out of my hand. Instead of trying to recover and go to my strong arm, I just dropped an "F" bomb and set the bell down. I wanted to punch something so badly I was shaking, but I knew if I did, I would break my hand and the weekend would really be done. So I sucked it up and went on. I was pissed, but I went on.

My anger from my failure at the snatch test and my fear that I would not be able to master it on the second attempt fill my memories of the first day. We learned the nuances of teaching the swing and get-up and clean, did 2 or 3 full workouts and over 700 hundred swings. Every 20-30 minutes the gym-boss would tell us to get up and do some swings, so the speaker would stop and have us do just that. Sometimes, someone would commit a safety violation or be late or lazy getting back to the circle and we'd have to do some more. Honestly, other than absorbing the information, I didn't care. I was just so angry about that snatch test, and I was trying to formulate a plan for the next morning.

The day done, dinner had, and a few hours of sleep behind me, I woke up yet again at the buttcrack of dawn. But the second day I was bound and determined not to defeat myself before I started. I visualized myself finishing the test, sometimes with the 16kg, sometimes with the 12kg, but I tried to always think of myself as finishing it. I just couldn't decide what route to take--the 16 or the 12. I was so afraid my grip would peter out again with the 16, but I'd never even attempted 80 straight 12kg snatches that I could remember. I was pretty sure I could do them, though. I talked with Sandy about it, asked Dave, asked my assistants. I hate making decisions. In the end, I nailed the test and the rest of the day was so much better for it. It's probably a good thing, too, because I don't think I've ever been as physically exhausted as I was that day. We learned the snatch, squat and press, did the VO2 Max protocol, a squat workout, a bazillion swings, and goodness only knows what else. Just when my body was about to disown me, the day came to an end. To celebrate...dinner at a fun little restaurant downtown then off to bed.
I knew as I went to bed that I would wake up sore. I had been spared any soreness Saturday morning, but there was just no hope that that would happen after the day we had had on Saturday. Man, I was right. Getting up and getting moving was the right idea, though, and John DuCane's morning QiGong exercise loosened us all up and got us ready to have our form tested on all the exercises, teach a student or two, then do the grad workout. I even got the added bonus of meeting the Friday's on Sunday morning. As if that weren't treat enough, they decided to meet all of us who were staying in town and go to dinner later that night. After a weekend of hard work, we all cut loose and had a great time at a little brew pub a couple of blocks from the hotel. Then went back and FELL into bed.

These are the facts. I'm still trying to collect my thoughts enough to express more about my feelings on the weekend. When I do, there'll be more.

Here are some pics...
I'm not sure what I'm practicing here. Probably cleans, but I've obviously just gotten a big dose of something wickedly sour--probably the fresh memory of my jacked up snatch test.

Keep it tight! Practicing my roundhouse kick as I encourage Beau to keep it all pulled together.
Doing some cleans against the fence (a.k.a. against the wall) to teach "taming the arc."
Day Two...

Mr. Whitley demonstrates what can be accomplished with a bit of tension.

Susan Finley, RKC II gives me a moment on camera after spending the day encouraging me and imparting the nuances of perfect form. (Please note teammates passed out on the ground behind us.)
Sandy Sommer and I revel in the idea that not only is day two over, but we survived it.
Peter and I get ready for the graduate workout. He's a state trooper in Pennsylvania and a SUPER nice guy. I'm not sure why he looks like he thinks I'm crazy here.
20 sec walking see-saw press, 10 sec reset, 20 sec swing, 10 sec rest...for the length of the field.
The last step of the graduate workout with Sandy cheering me on. The brunette to my right is Kelly Cassidy from Massachusetts. As I was wandering around the meet & greet looking like a lost puppy, she rescued me, pulling me into her group and warmly welcoming me in. We started the weekend together, and thanks to her, we ended it together, too. She crossed the line first, and came back to join me as I finished my grad workout. I was privileged to make friends with her this weekend, and have no doubts she will be an absolute force as an RKC.
On the morning of the last day, we were given a "victim" to teach the swing and get-up. As I was finishing that up and carrying the bells back to the gym, I hear my name and see none other than Fawn Friday looking straight at me! How exciting!!! Aaron was there, too, and they cheered us on during the grad workout after which we snapped some pics. I know I had my picture made with Fawn at some point during this, but for some reason I can't find it. Regardless, I found the one of me and Aaron and have one of the two of them. I'm just tickled beyond words to have gotten to meet them in person.
The girls of Team Jones...Me, Aileen, Angela, and Bre.
Team Jones
Me; Breana Berry (Minneapolis, MN Real Estate Agent); Beau Nelson (Chicago, IL trainer); Drew Kearns (Lynchburg, VA trainer); Sandor Sommer (Towson, Maryland trainer); Trevis Chandler (San Francisco, CA); Peter Myers (Lander, PA highway patrol); Scott Ward (Waukegan, IL paramedic); Paul Gerard (St. Paul, MN postal employee); Phil Scarito, RKC; Rick Carranza, RKC; Armand Lavallee (Brigham, MA trainer); Aileen Medina (Washington D. C. trainer); Angela Ramos (Crown Point, IN trainer); Susan Finley, RKC II; Brett Jones, Master RKC; Jared Fleurent (Fairhaven, MA trainer); Mark Lemkuhl (Montgomery, AL Crossfit).
We're official! I'm really glad that Sandy and I got to go through this together. We had the opportunity to talk several times before the weekend came around, often bouncing ideas off each other and hoping we were as prepared as we felt like we were. Having someone I "knew" (though we'd never met in person) there with whom to commiserate was nice.
And, well, there's just not enough to say about David...
This is what Kelly looks like when she's not slinging bells. And it's yet another example of how photogenic I am. This was taken before I consumed a single drop of alcohol.
I couldn't resist taking a snap of the wine bottle. How funny is that name?!
"Here, hold my beer."

As much credit as I have to give David for bent pressing Fawn, doing a Turkish get-up balancing a pitcher of beer on one's fist is quite impressive. Kelly even showed off with a windmill after she got to standing before she went all the way back down with it. That's Mary Ann, a trainer from Miami, doing the spotting--couldn't risk losing any beer, now could we?

Yes, I know some of these activities are likely to be questioned under the RKC code of conduct, but the restaurant was largely empty by this time...

TODAY'S WORKOUT: I nailed the 20kg TGU on both sides today. It was my first attempt.

3 rounds of 30 sec each...each round separated by 1 min of rest.

Double 16kg squat

Double 16kg C&P

Double 16kg Renegade Row

double 16kg swing.

Tabata swings with the 20kg.

5w1d to pics--159#
Off
Slept 3.5 hours

...the 4th of July involves chopping wood for the family pit BBQ.

The hubbie and I celebrated our 4th with my family at the farm. My sister organized an enormous BBQ for which her husband very generously spent the night and day cooking. Aunts, uncles, siblings, nieces, nephews and family friends from as far away as New Mexico showed up and had a grand time. Entertainment for the afternoon included watching some of the guys chopping wood for the BBQ pit.
Here my dad tries to teach my nephew Sean the fine art of using a wedge and sledge to split wood. Obviously, Sean isn't quite getting the drift, and Daddy finally gave up trying to describe it, eventually taking the sledge away and giving it a few swings himself. For a second, I could see my dad 25 years ago, with arms that looked like tree trunks, going about his day on the farm. I remember seeing him push a fence post back and forth a few times, wrap his arms around it, and yank it out of the ground by hand. In his day, he was one strong dude.

The hubby, born and bred a city boy, even gave it a try after seeing what a hard time the kid was having. Bless him for trying, he finally got it done but did it the hard way. Anybody can pick up some serious "good ol' boy" or girl points if they can tell me what all is wrong with this picture. :)

My brother-in-law is manning part of the spread here, chicken on the pit and ribs and butts in the cooker. He did a fantastic job.
If you've never had a chance to go to a real Southern BBQ, you should add it to your bucket list. There is truly nothing like it.

My dad was all too happy to have his picture made with me. LOL. I'm looking a bit rough here. You can tell this was not a "wear your hat and newest dress"/Steel Magnolias/Gone With the Wind BBQ. I'll guarantee, though, that it was a lot more fun.

My sister-in-law is SuperMom. Three of these four belong to her, and there is an 11-year-old you don't see whom she home schools. They are truly brilliant, beautiful children--mirrors of their parents. In moments of pure insanity that would cause anyone else to throw up her hands in dispair, this woman calmly manages the situation and moves on, completely nonplussed.

Most of the pictures I took were just mediocre, but I came out with a few that I really like. This one is my favorite.

I have the most amazing, wonderful family in the world, each member unique in his or her own way. Every time I think of them I am overwhelmed and humbled to realize that I have been granted such a precious gift. I could share a dozen more pictures, but I'll spare you.

WORKOUT: I drove to Nashville today to work with David and, as always, came away with arms and legs like noodles and endorphins to die for as reward. We did heavy work, double cleans and presses, double squats, double swings, all with 16's. And my PR for the day was double snatching the 16's...a few times! Doing it took me a couple of tries, and the end results weren't the prettiest snatches you've ever seen, but they counted, fully extended. BOOYAH! Then we did swings from hell starting with the 24 and moving around to various lower weights. Needless to say, in the end I was completely smoked, but it was great.
